Abstract
Maternal perinatal mental health problems pose significant public health challenges worldwide. Among these problems, perinatal depression (PND) is the most common condition. PND is a devastating mental illness because it is linked to overall poor maternal health and impaired maternal functioning. The resultant difficulties in mother-to-infant bonding may hinder the quality of the mother-infant relationship, which is critical for the infant’s development and mental health. Despite its public health relevance, PND is globally both underrecognized and undertreated. Even if detected by health-care professionals, studies show low access and adherence to treatments. In this scenario, information and communication technologies have brought an opportunity to overcome logistical and economic barriers to preventing and treating PND. This chapter provides a concise overview of PND, delivers very up-to-date evidence on Internet-based interventions (IBIs) to prevent and treat PND, and discusses suggestions for future advancements in research, practice, and policy. The included learned lessons and recommendations for the field will be highly valuable not only for clinicians and researchers interested in PND IBIs but also for developing, studying, and implementing IBIs to address depression throughout the life cycle.
