Abstract
Years of mind–body dualism (i.e., organic or psychogenic cause) have stigmatized patients with functional illness and perpetuated ineffective treatment models for individuals with the functional illness. The current chapter discusses the transition to the biopsychosocial model of functional illness and a working model of functional illness. Suggestions are provided on elements of a comprehensive psychological assessment that considers the biopsychosocial perspective with suggestions on appropriate psychological diagnoses. Options for treatment of functional symptoms such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment-therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), hypnosis and biofeedback are offered. Finally, suggestions are provided on communicating functional diagnoses and treatment recommendations to patients with the functional illness.
