Abstract

Vasculitis is defined as inflammation of the blood vessel(s). The clinical presentation can be highly variable depending on the organ system(s) and size of the vessel involved. The clinician must recognize that manifestations of vasculitis are often part of a disease process and not a single entity. Classification criteria for vasculitis have been developed and modified over the years; however, it is generally categorized according to the size of the vessel affected (small, medium, large) but also according to immune complex-mediated or pauci-immune disease. Prompt recognition of vasculitis is important due to life-threatening effects on the involved organ systems.
