Abstract

Tests and assessments are events that generate anxiety and stress for most teenagers and young people, in high school and university. In the school environment, adaptive ways of coping are essential to deal with stressors typical of academic assessment situations, in addition to influencing student engagement and study behavior, thus affecting their academic performance. This chapter describes aspects of coping with test anxiety and its relationship with academic performance, illustrating with data from research conducted with high school and undergraduate students from two capital cities in the Brazilian Southeast. The results show the relationship between stress and anxiety in situations of school tests and their coping, and academic performance. Thus, they can contribute to the proposal of interventions that minimize the emotional states experienced by students in the context of academic assessments, or even expand and favor adaptive coping of these situations.
