Multidisciplinary Surgical Consensus on Neck Emergencies

Primary Management in General, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery

Abstract

This chapter is intended for doctors and surgeons who already own the basic principles of first aid and general surgery, to provide them with practical skills for the management of adult patients affected by neck emergencies and the setting up of primary life-saving procedures. In all cases, standard emergency procedures and hospital protocols must precede any further advice provided by this text. Before consultation, we also recommend a review and study of neck anatomy (Kohan EJ, Wirth GA, Clin Plast Surg. 2014;41:1–6); in particular, in our opinion, it would be very useful to know the Advanced Trauma Life Support protocol (Galvagno SM, Nahmias JT, Young DA. Anesthesiol Clin. 2019;37(1):13–32.) and the practical subdivision of the neck by zones proposed during trauma evaluation, to better focus the diagnostic process (Alao T, Waseem M. Neck Trauma. 2021 Feb 10; Jain RK, Chakraborty P, Joshi P, Pradhan S, Kumari R. Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2019;71(Suppl 1):352–357).
