Abstract
The focus of the chapter is the role of the clinician in organizational financial management. At the conclusion of the chapter, the clinician will have developed familiarity with key financial concepts and operations sufficient to allow knowledgeable participation in organizational budget planning activities in cooperation with financial and accounting professionals. The intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of budget management as it is applied to budget-driven public healthcare systems in general with a focus on the Veterans Administration Healthcare System in particular. Examples of budgetary planning, operational management strategy, and evaluation are provided throughout the chapter with specific examples from VA health used to illustrate the budget concepts and strategies that are presented and discussed.
