Sports Medicine and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Abstract

The ankle and foot, with the multiple small bones and surrounding tendons and structures, and the superficial location, constitute a perfect target for ultrasonographic examination. In this chapter we provide a standardized and detailed approach to a complete examination of the majority of structures in the ankle anatomic region that will be divided into anterior, medial, lateral, and posterior ankle regions. We will briefly discuss the foot region with the major structures that might be implicated in pathology in this anatomic region. The major structures in each region are described alongside the recommended patient, examiner, and probe positioning.
