Intervention Mapping Step 6: Evaluation Plan

Nursing: Health Education and Improving Patient Self-Management

Abstract

In step 6 of intervention mapping, both the process evaluation and the evaluation to determine the impacts achieved by the health intervention are planned. The evaluation plan reflects the performance and change objectives formulated in step 2 of intervention mapping and the implementation-specific performance and change objectives formulated in step 5 of intervention mapping. The evaluation plan describes how the intervention will be evaluated. Impact evaluation assesses the level at which effects were achieved and is linked to the performance and change objectives, e.g., at the level of a change in social-cognitive determinants, at the level of actual behavior change, or at the level of long-term behavior maintenance, for patients or clients. Process evaluation examines how the implementation process went and is linked to the implementation-specific performance and change objectives; it is concerned with why the health intervention was or was not effective.
