Abstract

The article explores the issue of possible prototypes—models, paradigms—of absolute instrumental music in the European culture of modern and contemporary times. The act of speech, gesture-dance-ritual, the laws of natural processes (biological, physical and mathematical, etc.) are the most distinguishable among such paradigms. The article looks into the relation between the said paradigms within the European music of various periods and styles, while the actual paradigms are being analyzed. A special focus has been given to conceptualizing contemporary music paradigms that significantly simplify its perception. Stravinsky’s music, its perception by the author himself and his contemporaries, serves as the first bright illustration of the ritual-gesture paradigm in action.
