COVID-19 and Marginalisation of People and Places

Abstract

Historically, globalisation has contributed to the spatial spread of infectious diseases, demonstrating the interdependence arising from trade and tourism, which has boosted intercontinental exchange of both goods and viruses. Structural development problems, including increases in urbanisation and population mobility, are currently creating the conditions for the explosion of endemic outbreaks with regional and global reach, generating important threats to public health. Taking as an example the global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the authors discuss the existence of hybrid conditions that have permitted the rapid spread of this pandemic in hyperconnected territories, where traditional food practices coexist with precarious health surveillance resources and tourism involving thousands of visitors, who move from intermodal hubs with the potential to connect various parts of the globe within a matter of hours. In contrast, they analyse the spread of the same virus in remote territories, examining the case of SARS-CoV-2 in Mozambique, particularly in the province of Niassa, where field work was carried out in the city of Lichinga to investigate local pandemic effects.
