Abstract

Biofilms shield microbes from the surrounding environment, enabling them to spread and colonialize. Therefore, they represent a significant economic and medical burden. Antibodies are extensively used in the clinic to treat various diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune disorders, and were suggested as a potential solution to cope with biofilms. The major advantages of antibody therapy are in providing immediate protection which remains in the blood for weeks to months, high specificity with low toxicity while not harming the gut microbiota, making antibodies an appealing therapeutic regiment. Several promising anti-biofilm antibodies are in pre-clinical and clinical evaluations, heralding the beginning of a new era in biofilm therapeutics.
