Abstract
According to Maslow’s theory, humans have five categories of needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualisation. These are depicted in a hierarchical pyramid where more fundamental needs such as food and shelter sit at the bottom and more abstract concepts such as self-fulfilment are met as one moves up. Given the many differences between small-scale fisherfolk and industrial scale fishing, as well as the spectrum of purchasing behaviours and abilities around the world, Maslow’s theory is quite relevant when applied to seafood. This chapter discusses the move towards sustainable seafood.
