Global Scenario of Coconut and Coconut Water

Abstract

Coconut is grown in more than 93 countries of the world. The Philippines, Indonesia and India are the major countries leading in its area under cultivation, production and productivity. The coconut industry, which was traditionally relying up on copra and coconut oil and to some extent on coir and coir-products, is passing through tremendous transformation towards product diversification, low-volume-high-value product development, by-product utilization as well as more importantly as a health and functional drink both in the coconut cultivating and non-cultivating regions of the world. Different agencies have made elaborate surveys and forecasted the global demand of coconut water in the coming years. This chapter provides an account of the global market of coconut water in general and specifically on coconut water concentrate, packaged coconut water, organic coconut water etc. The use of coconut water to reduce sugar in other fruit juices is briefly mentioned. The country-wise trend in coconut water use in Brazil, USA, and other European countries as well as the list of most prominent manufacturers and suppliers of coconut water are also indicated.
