Abstract

This chapter critiques the fundamental principles, values, management, leadership and policy assumptions of Conscious Capitalism from a Christian worldview including Christian servant-leadership. Conscious capitalism possesses many attributes consistent with Christian worldview including promoting the greater good, collaborative stakeholder relationships, and sustainable and environmental growth. It fails, however, to address the spiritual (sin), moral and human nature root causes of market failure and reinforces the materialistic world view that characterizes capitalism. Conscious capitalism will require significant changes in consumer and investor attitudes/behavior to be consistently effective.

Notes

  1. 1.

The foundation of the disobedience was human pride in wanting to be “like God” and serve not the creator, but their own interests, hence, a similar criticism to modern capitalism’s focus on self over the greater good.

  2. 2.

Gross margin is the net sales revenue minus cost of goods sold.
