Abstract
Sent to Korea in 1956, after the armistice, Arnold Schwartzman used his talents as an artist to create memorials to British soldiers. He was the last British soldier to depart from the Korean peninsula after the armistice. A natural storyteller, his memories provide colourful details of a soldier’s life—the mundane and unpredictable. After leaving Korea, Arnold’s passion for art took him to Hollywood, where he worked as a graphic designer, screenwriter, and producer. Other than Michael Caine, he is the only British Korean War veteran to win an Academy Award (Best Documentary, 1982).
