Abstract
An Englishman, Roy Painter found himself in the Australia Regiment when he arrived in Korea in 1952. As a signalman he took a position with the Australian commanders behind the front lines. What Roy remembers most is the American jazz bands, the leave, and the time spent joking with other soldiers. It’s a choice to remember the levity. He diminishes the moments of gravity when Chinese soldiers fired on him at a river, or the lack of attention paid to veterans upon his return home.
