Critical States at Phase Transitions of Pure Substances

Abstract

The specific volume of carbon dioxide (v/dm3kg−1) was measured by varying the pressure (p) 1–600 bar and the temperature (T) at each pressure in the range of 273–1000 K. Using these v, ρ = 1/v, p, and T quantities taken from the literature, phase diagrams consisting of VT and ρT isobars as well as ρp isotherms were drawn. Possible phase regions and critical points were determined by evaluating the cut-off points of their extensions as well as the shapes of isobars and isotherms and the distances between them. The critical pressure of the liquid–solid equilibrium curve was found to be 5700 bar from the cut-off point of the extensions of the isotherms in the ρp phase diagram. It has been determined that the supercritical fluid formed in the supercritical fluid region exists in the range of 50–3800 bar.
