Quantitative Parameters of Pleistocene Sediments in the World Ocean

Abstract

Based on deep-sea drilling data, the paper considers such quantitative parameters of Pleistocene sedimentation in the World Ocean as masses of dry sediment (in 1018 g), their accumulation rates (in 1018 g/million years) and mass accumulation rates (in g/cm2/thousand years). A comparative analysis of the obtained parameters for the main ocean basins is carried out. Global trends in the evolution of oceanic sedimentation in the Pleistocene (increasing fluxes of lithogenic, carbonate, and siliceous matter) are revealed. The regional phenomenon of predominance of carbonate over lithogenic material fluxes in the Eopleistocene in the pelagic realm of the Atlantic Ocean has been noted. Explanations of the identified trends in terms of the history of neotectonic movements, evolution of the Earth’s glaciation, fluctuations of the sea level in the World Ocean, and history of paleoproductivity are offered.
