Abstract

The chapter illustrates the background, rationale and approach of the Interreg trAILs project, focusing on four key aspects: principles of transnational cooperation and action research and their operational integration, composition and roles of the project partnership, structure and logic of intervention, selection and scope of the pilot sites. The innovative aspects of the project as well as its overall implementation are thoroughly described, thus providing a clear reference for understanding and interpreting the following methodological chapters.

    The ASP covers an area of 450,000 km2 which hosts around 70 million of inhabitants, inclusive of the orographic mountain range as well as part of the catchment areas of some of the major central European rivers (Danube, Adige, Po, Rhone and Rhine) and key metropolitan regions (Lyon, Geneve, Zurich, Munich, Turin, Milan, Vienna and Ljubljana).

    EUSALP is the European Strategy for the Alpine macro-region, a transnational platform joined by the major institutional stakeholders of the Alpine area (belonging to seven countries among which 5 EU member states, divided in 48 regions) aiming at shaping and implementing a common governance framework.
