Abstract

In 1906, George W. Crile of the Cleveland Clinic described the radical neck dissection (RND) encompassing removal of all the lymph nodes (LNs) on one side of the neck and including removal of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN), internal jugular vein (IJV), and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. In 1957, Hayes Martin described routine use of the RND for control of neck metastases. Later, in 1967, Oscar Suarez and E. Bocca described a more conservative operation which preserves the SAN, IJV, and SCM, and in the last three decades, further procedures have been described to selectively remove the involved regional LN groups.
