Abstract
Sophora flavescens is a deciduous, slow-growing shrub, growing to 1.5 m high by 1 m wide, with deltoid-sword-like leaves, 3–5 cm long and 1–2 cm wide. It belongs to the genus of the Fabaceae family, in which more than 15 members have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. It is endemic in Asia, Oceanica, and the Pacific islands, prefers light (sandy) or medium (loamy), moist neutral or alkaline soils, and requires ample sunlight to grow [1]. The active parts of the plant are its roots, which are harvested in autumn or spring, have a white to yellow color, with a very characteristic bitter taste and strong odor. Scientific research on Sophora flavescens was initially conducted in Russia in the early nineteenth century, although “therapeutic” applications have been reported in China as early as 100 B.C.
