Book cover Student Sex Work

Abstract

Student sex work has existed for many decades. Earning money by entering a range of commercial sex industries, usually hidden in the informal economies and in many countries illegal economies, has risen up the agenda in recent years. We are now more aware of both the nature, characteristics, prevalence and indeed the experiences of sex workers who engage in selling a variety of sexual services when in Higher Education. The introduction to the book will set out the broader areas to which the collection contributes and establishes the aims of the book. We provide summaries of the chapters, giving time to elevate the voices in the book which comes from many disciplines including psychotherapy, economics, sociology, social policy and practitioner voices. In this introduction we set out why this area is important to study and reflect on the expansion of knowledge in recent years, which has set out an agenda for change for how sex workers are treated in higher education.
