Abstract

Long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) is a major surgical challenge in pediatric surgery. In most cases, esophageal continuity can be restored using delayed and/or traction techniques. However, esophageal replacement may be required occasionally due to failed attempts to preserve the healthy and functional esophagus. The surgical approach chosen for esophageal reconstruction is often based on the institution’s expertise and resources. Failure of esophageal anastomosis, chronic strictures, uncontrolled leaks, recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula, and LGEA of any form are very complex problems, requiring early referral to a center of expertise and treatment with a multidisciplinary approach.
