Abstract
Studies of democracies around the world show widespread dissatisfaction. Change is needed, but the shared beliefs that hold society together also act as an obstacle to change. Challenging current ideological beliefs about democracy and the economy is basic to moving toward greater equity and sustainability. The political mobilizations that led to the emergence of the welfare state in the 1900s show the critical role played by grassroots coalitions able to overcome divisions. Labor unions and labor, socialist and communist parties played critical roles. Similar mobilizations of today’s movements—labor, environmental, feminist, racial justice, LGBTQ+, and others—are critical to establishing a deeper democracy, that is, a radical democracy that can move us toward solidarity.
