Abstract

Recent changes in the classification of epileptic seizures and the epilepsies have been important in incorporating a modern understanding of epilepsy mechanisms and the comorbidities of epilepsy, including impacts on mood and cognition. In this chapter, we will look at how EEG-fMRI has helped provide new insight, not only into the processes that lead to the generation of generalised seizures but also how these process may also reflect broader network disturbance which impacts upon patient comorbidity. We focus on adult studies of idiopathic generalised epilepsy but also consider the relevance of paediatric studies and how these may inform what we see in the adult.
