Abstract

This essay analyses the aftermath of the European integration process for Spain and Portugal. Starting from the impact Europeanism had during the transition to democracy in these two countries, it focuses on the key passages leading to support both the European Single Act (ESA) and the Maastricht Treaty. It describes the internal tensions towards these European turning points together with the impact they had on the implementation of domestic reforms such as welfare state, labour market and industrial privatization. It depicts the intra-Iberian relationship and the domestic debates as for ESA on the need to counterbalance the creation of the Single Market with strong social and cohesion policies, and as for Maastricht, it underlines the major problem both countries of the peninsula had to face to comply not only with the criteria established for the monetary union but also with the consequences of the already planned enlargements to central and eastern Europe.
