Abstract

This chapter provides a discussion of the status of research on trans demography and a discussion of needed areas of data collection and substantive research. In particular, the chapter sets forth the areas of work covered in the chapters within this volume, including measurement of gender identity, measurement of gender on surveys, demographic characteristics of nonbinary populations, and a focus on population health outcomes. Further, the chapter describes additional areas in which demographic knowledge is needed on transgender, gender minority, and nonbinary populations, such as migration and spatial distribution, family structure and childbearing, and labor market outcomes. The chapter concludes by considering how queer theory’s insights might be incorporated into demographic inquiry, including how trans demography could be uniquely positioned to aid in the incorporation of a queer theoretical perspective in demographic research more broadly.
