Abstract

In this chapter, we explain the development of the immune response after vaccination, differentiating between the primary immune response (first exposure with the antigen) and the secondary immune response (secondary exposure with the antigen). We also explain why it is necessary to give booster doses of vaccines for long-term protection and describe the various subtypes of vaccines. Then, we discuss the various steps of the cellular interaction and activation of the various immune cells after vaccination, with the induction of long-lived plasma cells and memory B cells, as well as the possible cellular targets of the various immunosuppressive drugs. For each immunosuppressive drug, we detail which part of the immune response is affected and its consequences on the immune response to vaccination, including recommendations for immunization with non-live vaccines and live vaccines.
