Abstract
International trade in electricity has become a contemporary reality. Regional electricity markets are now in operation on several continents while the technology for long-distance transmission is developing at an impressive pace. The vital importance of a secure electricity supply for the provision of the basic necessities of everyday life and the production of virtually any goods and services cannot be overstated. It is no surprise, therefore, that governments around the world have tightly regulated the electricity sector and free trade and competition are developing much slower than in most other industries. Nonetheless, liberalization of electricity markets is continuing and electricity is now widely regarded as a tradable commodity. At the same time, the energy world as we know it is undergoing its most radical transformation in more than a century.
