Seasonal Variation of Groundwater Quality for Irrigation Purposes in a Semi-Arid Region in Tamil Nadu, India

Climate Change Impact on Groundwater Resources

Abstract

Contamination of groundwater is a serious issue in arid and semi-arid regions all over the world. This study aims to evaluate the quality of groundwater for irrigation purposes using various irrigation indices associated with a geographic information system (GIS). A total of 50 groundwater samples were collected from agricultural fields, industrial zones, and densely populated areas in the study region. The collected samples were analyzed using standard procedures recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA). The results revealed that the concentration of sodium in all the sample locations was under the permissible limit and fit for irrigation purposes. An excess concentration of magnesium and salinity highly influenced the quality of groundwater for irrigation purposes. This study divulged that natural sources of contamination such as rock–water interaction, weathering of rocks, and the nature of an aquifer are the primary factors that cause groundwater contamination. This research helps decision- and policy-makers to take remedial action to avoid groundwater pollution in the study region.
