Allergies in COVID-19 and Post-COVID Syndrome

Textbook of Allergen Tolerance

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the immunity and atopic allergies in COVID and post-COVID syndrome. The pandemic SARS-CoV-2 infection has added to our knowledge about immune reactions and responses, uncommon clinical situations, risk factors for poor outcomes, and promoted novel treatment approaches. We consider the process of viral entry in a host cell and how Th2-cytokines can inhibit it, and corticosteroids suppress SARS-CoV-2 replication. There are controversial data concerning atopic allergies, mainly asthma, during COVID-19, and multifactorial influence on disease outcomes and residual changes. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and online surveys allow us a vision of the whole panorama.
