Abstract

The types of land cover and land use in China are complex and diverse, with significant geographic differentiation. There are five soil-vegetation latitudes from south to north in the eastern monsoon region, three soil-vegetation longitude zones from east to west in the northwest arid zone, and the Qinghai-Tibet alpine region has formed a special soil-vegetation plateau zone. The eastern region includes cultivated forest and urban land; the central region is interlaced land for agriculture, animal husbandry, and forestry; and the western region is animal husbandry, oasis agriculture, and desert land. This chapter describes the types, structures, distribution patterns, and spatio-temporal changes of land cover and land use in China. It provides a basis for understanding the important role and sustainability of China’s land use/cover change in global change research.

1 hm2 = 1 ha; 1 km2 = 100 ha; 1 mu = 0.0667 ha
