Abstract

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, rainstorms, floods, droughts, typhoons, landslides, and mudslides occur frequently in China. Two-thirds of the territory is a natural disaster-prone area; more than 50% of the population is exposed to natural disasters all year round. The level of disaster preparedness is low and losses are severe, and climate change is increasingly aggravating disaster risks. The risk of natural disaster losses in China shows a clear spatial pattern of predominant east-west divergence, supplemented by north-south divergence. This chapter explains the types, distribution, causes, and countermeasures of natural disasters, the comprehensive risk prevention cohesion model, and the “national response” disaster reduction paradigm to provide a basis for understanding the formation mechanism of disasters.
