The Danube River Delta

Abstract

In this chapter, the Danube Delta climatic characteristics, long-term precipitation and temperature values temporal and spatial variations are presented. Research is based on gridded maximum and minimum temperatures and precipitation data, covering 53 years (1961–2013) at the best available resolution of 0.1°. Through this study, we assess the most used 25 temperature and precipitation indices (20 temperature and 5 precipitation indices), capturing the climatic variation frequency and intensity. Four main results were identified: there is a very similar spatial pattern regarding the evolution of the temperature and precipitation indices, which are due to the vicinity of the Black Sea and to the rising continentalism westward; small spatial variation of the indices due to the large extension of water bodies in the focus region; the maximum daily temperature based indices indicated significant increasing trend as dominant, but for the great majority of the daily minimum temperature derived indices not significant decreasing trend was identified; last but not least, the general decrease of precipitation values with significant decrease in case of two precipitation indices was found. The main conclusion of this chapter is that the Danube Delta’s climate has become drier and warmer over the considered period.
