Abstract
Learning and memory are central topics in general psychology, and understanding the basic processes is essential for any kind of knowledge acquisition. Thus, this chapter provides an overview of the main psychological theories of learning and of the structure and functioning of human memory. In each case, special reference is made to the acquisition of movement skills. Important fields of application are questions about optimal instructions for movement execution, the way of practicing, feedback, and transfer. The development of ideal memory representations of movement is also addressed.
