Abstract
Mapping issues and topics related to LGBT research is an important dimension for exploring the patterns that exist and contemplating the reasons for the variations. A review of recent research on the topic identifies mapping and understanding the importance of maps from those in different disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. A global perspective represents a focus worthy of more attention. We present world maps of 13 topics of interest regarding LGBT issues. The data derive from Google Scholar, using the number of hyperlinks as a proxy to gauge each country’s concern with each topic. Quintiles are used to rank 198 countries based on absolute number of hyperlinks and their ratio of hyperlinks to population. The results reveal wide variations in the ranking of countries on topics ranging from discrimination and rights to religion, cities and social media. The maps should inspire questions about how and why the patterns vary between and within geographic regions (Europe, Asia, and Africa). The maps also offer many opportunities for investigating LGBT topics below the national level.
