Abstract
SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the disease Covid-19, did not exist when I began researching these maps. Then the blind workings of evolution created a tiny package of genetic material with the capacity to upend our everyday existence. As I write, the illness has claimed more than 5.6 million lives. Our response to the pandemic created its own problems: lockdowns and the curtailment of economic activity caused mental distress and physical harm. This new pandemic illness, furthermore, has been visited upon a world suffering from existing inequalities of health, wealth, and security. The full impact of Covid-19 will not become clear for several years, however, so this chapter considers wellbeing as it was just before the start of the pandemic.
