Design Patterns, Emerging Principles, and Mobile Considerations

  • Chapter

Part of the Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval, and Services book series (SLICRS)

Abstract

Design patterns and principles help IAs create new information spaces that remain consistent with previous systems, leveraging users’ learned behaviors and experiences. This chapter introduces design patterns and emerging principles used today in IA, UX, and related fields. We use the popular Bootstrap framework to illustrate how patterns can be used and reused across information spaces to provide familiar interfaces for users. Similarly, emerging principles like responsive design guide IAs toward designing effective information spaces today and for the future. Finally, we look at the mobile space.
