Abstract

Neurosurgical training and education will evolve substantially over the next decade in response to new technologies, regulations, practices, and the changing demographics and needs of resident education. In order to build up realistic, scientific, and implementable educational strategies, the history and the progress in the field have to be carefully studied, and valid lessons should be learned of. It is the task of the educator to come up with teaching and assessment methods, each implemented with the aim of updating operative skills assessment and instruction to maximize teaching opportunities in the OR. Each of these methods varies in terms of focus and mode of implementation, but they all share a common goal of maximizing the development of the neurosurgical resident by encouraging proficiency in neurosurgery.
