Abstract

Seymour Cray was quoted as saying “If you were plowing a field, which would you rather use? Two strong oxen or 1,024 chickens?” [WikCray]. This quote vividly illustrates the evolution of parallel processing from 1980–2020. Figure 2.1 breaks down the timeline into three overlapping waves of parallel systems.
