Abstract
We are interested in quantifying the theoretical performance of an optical communications system linking underwater vehicles and satellites. We will limit our discussion to the use of the APD and BQP sensors described in Chapter 5. For simplicity, in what follows we will ignore atmospheric effects and concentrate our analysis on the underwater channel. That is, our interest is the quality of the transmission on the water column above an underwater vehicle traveling below the mixed layer. However, a detailed link budget of the system should consider the non-negligible effects created by the atmospheric column and the air-water interface.
