Systematics and Phylogeny of Dissochaeteae

Abstract

Dissochaeteae are a tribe of c. 90 species and six genera composed of erect, spreading terrestrial or lianous scrambling and epiphytic shrubs. The tribe inhabits the tropical lowland to mid-montane rainforests and secondary forests in Southeast Asia with the Malesian region as the center of diversity. It is mostly found in light-exposed habitats such as tree fall gaps, river margins, and forest edges. Dissochaeteae is characterized by mostly thyrsoid inflorescences, tetramerous, and diplostemonous flowers with isomorphic or dimorphic stamens and berry fruits. Monophyly of Dissochaeteae is strongly supported, and it consists of six monophyletic genera. The tribe likely originated from a South American ancestor during the late Eocene. Indochina and Borneo are ancestral areas of the Dissochaeteae in Southeast Asia from where westward dispersal to NE India and E Bhutan, within West Malesia of the Sunda Shelf and eastward dispersal to Wallacea and New Guinea of the Sahul Shelf occurred during the late Pleistocene.
