Abstract
In the introduction to the book, I emphasise the urgent need for all to address the global climate change crisis and its significant impacts on ocean health. I also consider the role of contemporary human cultural attachments to the sea (sometimes described as cultural heritage), and how political and economic decisions may lead to the degradation of oceans and coasts. I argue that it is important for nation states to adopt an inclusive approach to ocean governance, so as to transform the ocean management sector and to sustainably use ‘resources’ arising from the ocean and coasts. The introduction also outlines the book’s more than 20 chapters, providing insight into diverse perspectives in ocean management, especially from the view of the humanities and social sciences.
