Effective Public Health Policy in Organ Donation

Abstract

Organ transplantation has a passionate history of extraordinary success in modern medicine. During the last decade (2010–2020), Paraná’s transplant system sought not only an increase in the number of transplants performed. To provide means to treatment access through the universal health public system (SUS) and monitoring, the efficacy of the treatment was complimentary targets. After initial redesign, transplant teams were called to provide treatment access, organ collection availability, establishment of routine protocols, constitution, and active operation of technical speciality chambers. Currently, a total of 147 teams in hospitals and laboratories are responsible for organ and tissue transplants. The waiting list demonstrated a constant patients’ inflow and outflow, counting with 2252 patients in 2020. During the period, 5644 transplants were performed, roughly 564 transplants per year or 1.54 transplants per day. The total number and 1-year survival for each organ were heart (253, 75.4%), liver (1653, 77.3%), deceased kidney (3525, 84.74%), pancreas (33, 65.6%), and pancreas-kidney (180, 77%). Corneal (9694) and bone marrow (2711) transplants completed the picture. The posttransplant sector involves surveillance transmission of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections; donor’s culture monitoring and handling of adverse events reported by the transplant teams; and organization of scientific meetings about the issue.
