Abstract

In the end of 1989 at the invitation of George R. Sell (University of Minnesota), I visited the US for the first time and spent 2 months in Minneapolis. Before coming back to Kiev, I gave a talk at John Milnor’s seminar and then, as did a number of mathematicians who visited New York City at that time, stayed for a few days at Dennis Sullivan’s apartment in New York City, and heard from my host a phrase that sounded more or less as follows: Lived as all others, but all of a sudden woke up famous.
