Abstract

In “Days of Dissension: North Park College During the Vietnam War,” John J. Laukaitis analyzes how different constituents at a Christian denominational college in Chicago, Illinois governed by the Evangelical Covenant Church developed varied positions on the conflict in Southeast Asia. The chapter explains how a student body and a board of directors largely supported the Vietnam War and how the majority of faculty and a faction of students opposed and protested America’s growing involvement in the region. Attention is given to the campus events surrounding the responses to the Cambodian campaign, the Kent State shootings, and—in particular—North Park College’s handling of the national Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam. Through the chapter, Laukaitis argues that common depictions of student activism in the 1960s and 1970s fail to call attention to those campuses where support for the war was considerable.

The North Park College News of Friday, May 15, 1970 stated that 450 students unanimously supported the strike. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, North Park College enrolled some 1200 to 1300 students. While difficult to determine the total number of students who supported the strike, the 450 students who gathered on the evening of May 4, 1970 did not represent a majority of the student body. “North Park Joins National Strike,” North Park College News, vol. 50, no. 16, 15 May 1970, 1; “Enrollment,” North Park Bulletin, 1969–1971, 7, no. 4 (August 1969): 159. The enrollment of North Park College in 1970 was approximately 1300 students. Milton B. Engebretson, “Report of the President,” Covenant Yearbook 1970 (Chicago: The Evangelical Covenant Church of America, 1970), 13. One sign that friction between factions of students existed was opposing statements sent to the Covenant Companion. In the June 1, 1970 Covenant Companion, a statement opposing the Vietnam War was submitted by students. “We Will No Longer Remain Silent,” The Covenant Companion 59, no. 11 (June 1, 1970): 20. In the July 15, 1970 Covenant Companion, students submitted an admonition of the cancellation of classes because of the strike. “Question Priorities,” The Covenant Companion 59, no. 14 (June 1, 1970): 2, 15.
