Abstract

The culture of autism is emerging as a minority member group of our society. Adults with autism have unique qualities that contribute to the betterment of society (e.g., attention to detail, intense focus), yet they continue to experience disenfranchisement at work, interpersonally, and in integrated social environments. The dominant cultural paradigm of neurotypicals limits opportunities for the potential of success for autistic adults. Adopting the principles of cultural humility by both autistics and neurotypicals encourages mutual diplomacy between the two cultures. Through lifelong learning and critical self-reflection of both autistics and neurotypicals, the power imbalance between the two cultures can be mediated, and individuals with autism can experience equity and improved opportunities for success in life and humanity can benefit from their full participation in society.
