Abstract
This chapter will detail the evolution of community-based housing options for persons with intellectual disabilities (IDs). This history will follow the Olmstead decision and other edicts that were involved that led to widespread deinstitutionalization and the move to the community for persons with ID. An overview will be provided related to the array of services that are offered in residential community-based housing options. The importance of staff training will also be detailed as it relates to the effective teaching of functional skills and increased autonomy in residential settings for persons with ID. The importance of the use of characteristically positive teaching-based interactions will also be covered with respect to fostering independence in these settings. An argument will be made for the use of these types of settings in the community as effective tools for increasing autonomy and facilitating increased community involvement for those with ID.
