Abstract
After citing the Australian Government standards for nursing homes, this final chapter includes some critique of the specified outcomes, which depend on professional staff to ensure that they are well met to the satisfaction of residents and families. Even with the best of intentions things can go wrong, so the chapter includes some problem-solving suggestions. Negligence, neglect and abuse are issues requiring detailed attention as they are, regrettably, increasing phenomena in some nursing homes. Responses, including preventative measures, are given prominence with the intention of raising readers’ consciousness, and with the hope these alarming statistics can be reduced, and residents’ suffering minimised. Using the adage ‘home sweet home’, the book concludes with a degree of optimism that with an enlightened, best practice focus, the community’s expectation of exemplary residential aged care can be met.
While (some of) the stories are based on factual situations, real names and other details have been altered to protect the identity of the persons concerned. Resemblance to any particular person is therefore purely coincidental.
