Abstract

Expecting a nursing home to ‘run well’ without strong, skilled leadership is akin to assuming a ship will sail in the right direction without a rudder. Some descriptions of effective leadership are offered here, together with the essential ingredients for exemplary governance. Governance involves proven, reliable systems, without which nursing home staff may be ‘left to their own devices’, particularly when ‘in charge’. With regularly reviewed systems, staff education and student involvement are also given due attention, described in this chapter and illustrated by examples of best practice. Although partnership with families is given emphasis in other parts of the book, the importance of such relationships is examined here in connection with leadership. When managers recognise families’ needs, problem-solving can be expedited and relationships enhanced.

While (some of) the stories are based on factual situations, real names and other details have been altered to protect the identity of the persons concerned. Resemblance to any particular person is therefore purely coincidental.
